Moon was struck while riding his bicycle on Stetzer Road near Stephanie Drive; reward offered for information regarding suspected driver

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH, (May 02, 2024) - Thomas Moon, a 68-year-old resident of Bucyrus, sustained injuries Thursday morning following a hit-and-run crash in Liberty Township, Crawford County.

Hit-and-Run Bicycle AccidentA 68-year-old bicyclist from Bucyrus was injured Thursday morning after his bike was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Stetzer Road in Crawford County.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, Moon, a well-known Ohio cyclist, was riding his bike eastbound on Stetzer Road near Stephanie Drive when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle around 7:20 a.m. The unidentified driver fled the scene after the collision.

Moon, a longtime avid cyclist, was initially taken to Bucyrus Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to Mansfield Med Central.

Friends of Moon have offered a monetary reward for information leading to the hit-and-run vehicle described as a dark blue or black small SUV or mini-van.

BICYCLE HIT-AND-RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the accident to contact the Sheriff's Office at 419-562-7906.

Our roads pose a unique danger for bicycle riders like Moon. According to the National Safety Council, 100,000 cyclists were injured as a result of motor vehicle crashes in 2018.

In most cases involving hit-and-runs, the at-fault driver feels as though he or she can avoid the consequences of their actions if they leave the scene of the crash. However, the driver who hit and injured Moon will likely face criminal charges when apprehended.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, but sadly, statistics indicate that approximately 11 percent of all crashes involve a hit-and-run driver. Many suspects flee the scene because they are intoxicated, driving without a license, or are concerned about being arrested if they remain at the scene.

In addition to the Sheriff's Office investigation, it is imperative that an independent probe is conducted, according to Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney.

"In cases where another's negligence results in another person's injury, the victim may be entitled to compensation via a personal injury lawsuit," added Bond, a Managing Partner for Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for The Legal Advocate.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Thomas Moon may be entitled to an injury claim and may seek recovery for damages, including medical expenses, future medical care, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

"After an accident, an attorney can be a resource and provide guidance and compassion," Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, added.

"The stress and worry following a serious injury can be overwhelming, disrupting all aspects of life, including family, work, finances, and overall quality of life. Although no amount of money can make up for a devastating injury, it is important that a victim is made aware of their rights and what they are entitled to by law," Formica added.
